Effective Measures to ban Corporal Punishments

Even though specific rules are framed to ban corporal punishments in the Schools, there is no strict implementation. This is because of the proper lack of supervision and control by the Education Department’s Inspectorate. Not only this, our Teacher Training system need to be revamped drastically especially in the Elementary Education Sector. The Elementary Teachers need to be trained suitably to deal benevolently with the children below the age of 14 which is very much sensitive age. The framers of the Curriculum for Elementary & Secondary Teacher Education should revise the syllabus for Psychological Foundations of Education which is a primary topic in Teacher Education Course, to be in conformity with the Children’s psychological needs. The Heads of Educational Institutions must keep a watch on the attitude of Teachers in the School from time to time, and obtain feed back from the students at least, twice in a year, about the nature and behaviour of the Teachers for taking corrective measures to stop the corporal punishments. The Teachers’ Conduct Rules should be framed firmly for implementation strictly, and any violation of the conduct rules by the Teaching community as well as the intentional acts of imposing corporal punishments on the children, must be viewed seriously followed by stringent disciplinary actions to the extent up to the level of dismissal from service besides criminal prosecution under law.
